Hurricane Sandy will long be regarded as the east coast’s superstorm for many years to come.  New York State Governor Cuomo certainly characterized it as a storm with some real significance.  In fact the Governor’s statement was that Sandy was “more impactful” over all and “affected many, many more people and places than Katrina.”
As of November 27 here is how the available statistics shape up:

For building inspection engineers, storms such as Sandy and Katrina offer an opportunity to observe first hand the damage buildings are subjected to in such furies of nature.  Certainly some of the damage observed in NABIE’s home area (Long Island and metropolitan New York) was unlike any seen in modern times.
The upcoming NABIE conference in Nashville in February will offer a presentation that discusses more of Sandy’s effects.
