NABIE Annual Conference

The Importance of Licensure and the Engineering Profession” — Changing the conversation to improve the public’s understanding of engineering as well as discuss the positive impact of engineering on the economy.

The Order of the Engineer was initiated in the United States to foster a spirit of pride and responsibility in the engineering professional, to bridge the gap between training and experience, and to present to the public a visible symbol identifying the engineer.

8:30-10:00 a.m. David Harro Sinkholes – Ground Subsidence Investigations.
Sinkholes – ground subsidence investigations and protocols used in Florida. Mr. Harro will be providing an understanding of the geophysical site characterizations; the geological subsurface testing methods and interpretations of geological testing date as it relates to ground subsidence investigations.

10:30am-12:00 a.m. (Theodor Sigman Lecturer)  Jeffery Stone, PhD, CBO – Part I American Grown Timber products.
Dr. Stone is currently a member of the Florida State Building Commission and will be lecturing on the use and benefits of American grown lumber and timber products.

1:00-2:30 p.m. (Theodor Sigman Lecturer)  Jeffery Stone, PhD, CBO – Part II American Grown Timber products.
Dr. Stone is currently a member of the Florida State Building Commission and will be lecturing on the use and benefits of American grown lumber and timber products.

3:00-4:30 p.m. Lee Shoemaker -Metal Buildings Inspections.
An overview of existing standards and inspection requirements found in the building code regarding metal building systems. This session will be valuable to those new to the area of metal building inspections and an excellent refresher for those who are already engaged in the practice.

8:30-10:00 a.m.  Byron Evetts, P.E.-Concrete Corrosion Control 101
Reinforced Concrete Corrosion Control 101 – concrete is the most abundant construction material on earth.  This session will help provide insight into the four elements which must be present for corrosion to occur.  You will also learn the fundamentals of techniques used to mitigate and control corrosion damage in concrete structures including material selection, coatings, inhibitors, and cathodic protection repair procedures.

10:30am-12:00 p.m. Byron Evetts, P.E.-Building Collapse Rescue Awareness
The Rescue Engineer in a Collapsed Building Environment –  This talk on urban search and rescue is insightful and important to any building inspection engineer. Structural collapse is most of the cause of victims being trapped in buildings and the first responders that are called to emergencies after earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, terroist activities, and other events need to know and understand the “multi-hazard” discipline of urban search-and-rescue (US&R).  Mr. Evetts is a specially trained professional engineer who performs various assessments for US&R during incident operations and holds a designation as a Structural Specialist (StS) and he will provide a brief overview of the StS Task Force mission and what you as a skilled lay person could do if called into action.
